Análisis espacio-temporal de la cobertura vegetal del jardín botánico de barranquilla, armando Dugand Gnecco durante los últimos 24 años.

Abstract

Esta investigación se basó en el análisis de la cobertura vegetal del Jardín Botánico Armando Dugand Gnecco durante los últimos 24 años. Para ello, se utilizaron imágenes satelitales Landsat 8 correspondientes a los años 2000 y 2024, descargadas desde la plataforma USGS Earth Explorer. La metodología aplicada tuvo un enfoque mixto, integrando herramientas cuantitativas y cualitativas. En la parte cuantitativa se empleó el Índice de Vegetación de Diferencia Normalizada (NDVI), con el fin de identificar y evaluar los cambios de la cobertura vegetal en el área de estudio. Paralelamente, se realizaron recorridos de campo para validar los resultados obtenidos y comprender de manera directa a las condiciones del terreno. Adicionalmente, se aplicaron encuestas de percepción a la comunidad aledaña, permitiendo identificar las causas sociales relacionadas a la pérdida y transformación de la cobertura vegetal. Los resultados evidencian una variación significativa en la cobertura vegetal con respecto al año 2000, observándose una disminución del vigor vegetal en sectores específicos del jardín, asociadas principalmente a factores antrópicos cómo la compactación del suelo, el tránsito peatonal, actividades recreativas, no controladas y la falta de vigilancia. Sin embargo, también se identificaron áreas donde aún permanecen especies nativas de gran importancia ecológica, lo cual representa un potencial para la recuperación y conservación del espacio.

This research was based on the analysis of the vegetation cover of the Armando Dugand Gnecco Botanical Garden during the last 24 years. For this, Landsat 8 satellite images corresponding to the years 2000 and 2024, downloaded from the USGS Earth Explorer platform, were used. The applied methodology had a mixed approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative tools. In the quantitative part, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used, in order to identify and evaluate changes in vegetation cover in the study area. At the same time, field tours were carried out to validate the results obtained and directly understand the conditions of the land. Additionally, perception surveys were applied to the surrounding community, allowing to know the social causes related to the loss of vegetation transformation. The results show a significant variation in vegetation cover compared to the year 2000, observing a decrease in plant vigor in specific sectors of the garden, mainly associated with anthropogenic factors such as soil compaction, pedestrian traffic, recreational activities, uncontrolled and lack of surveillance. However, areas were also identified where native species of great ecological importance still remain, which represents a potential for the recovery and conservation of the space.
