Neo-Soul como recurso en la creación musical contemporánea

Abstract

Este trabajo de grado analiza los recursos característicos del Neo-Soul para comprender cómo sus dimensiones melódicas, armónicas y rítmicas configuran su identidad sonora dentro de procesos contemporáneos de la creación musical. Desde un enfoque cualitativo aplicado, se realiza análisis documental y escucha analítica de obras seleccionadas, sistematizadas en fichas que registran melismas, contornos, voicings extendidos, reharmonizaciones, síncopas y micro-retardos, entre otros rasgos. Los resultados evidencian integración entre melodía y armonía mediante el uso recurrente de arpegios de 9ª, escalas pentatónicas y acordes con extensiones (9, 11, 13), así como grooves sincopados con estética de loop y feel laid back influenciados por el hip-hop y el gospel. Se concluye que estos recursos conforman un lenguaje propio del Neo-Soul y que el marco analítico propuesto ofrece criterios concretos para su estudio e interpretación.

This undergraduate thesis analyzes the characteristic resources of Neo-Soul in order to understand how its melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dimensions shape its sonic identity within contemporary processes of musical creation. Using an applied qualitative approach, the study conducts documentary analysis and analytical listening of selected works by Isaiah Sharkey and D’Angelo, organized through analytical sheets that record melismas, contour patterns, extended voicings, reharmonizations, syncopations, and micro-delays, among other traits. The results show an integration between melody and harmony through the recurrent use of 9th-based arpeggios, pentatonic scales, and chords with extensions (9, 11, 13), as well as syncopated grooves with a loop-based aesthetic and a laid-back feel influenced by hip-hop and gospel. It is concluded that these resources collectively define a distinct Neo-Soul language and that the analytical framework proposed provides concrete criteria for its study and interpretation.
